Ramblings: A Breath of Fresh Air for the Honest Thinker

I am a Christian Skeptic. While that is not the norm in Christian religious settings, it is quite the norm for those who are leaving Christianity for good, at least the skeptic part. It is with these leavers that my heart rests.

Regarding the pursuit of truth, there are two normalized approaches within Christendom at this period in history. These are only generalizations. The first is the paradigm of “faith.” God exists and all the Christian doctrines, as presently interpreted, are true. You only have the choice of being a good person (better than others) and accepting them or a bad person and questioning them. There is no place for critical thinking. Emily Catalano illustrates these points. She is one of the leavers of Christianity, and I suspect with good cause. She’s funny, so laugh.

Many people who have given up on that first approach (and with good reason) have selected the most recent philosophical fad, postmodernism. The major tenet of postmodernism is that there is no truth to pursue, only experiences to be had. In the Christian postmodernist perspective, asking hard questions and the pursuit of truth is an exercise in arrogance and will dampen any potential spiritual experience. So, we are not welcome there either.

I have found a new place for honest skeptics that I’m excited to tell you about, a place that feels like home. It is not a Christian place per se, and that’s okay. It is a profoundly honest place. Truth and honesty should be the natural habitats of God, not in the forest of self-delusion and sleight of hand. This place is Closer to the Truth. Robert Lawrence Kuhn hosts the series and you can watch episodes on YouTube, on their website, or on PBS.

Mr. Kuhn grapples with hard questions with authenticity. I have been binge-watching since Denton from my local church shared it with me. I feel so much at home there. If there is a God, God is not intimidated by our questions and critical thinking.
