Dear friends,
My monthly labs came in last night and once again, I’m still in remission from Multiple Myeloma. This makes 15 months of remission, for which I am profoundly grateful.
I attended a Multiple Myeloma update conference this week, virtually. It was a mixed bag. On the good side, for the first time I heard the word “cure” from Multiple Myeloma specialists. But I must put this in context. They were pointing out that about three or four new therapies are expected to hit the market this coming year, each one quite effective. None of them are a cure in themselves, as far as we know. But they expect that once it is on the market and can be used with other therapies, that cures will start to appear.
When I told my family in 2019 that I would do everything I could to stay alive, my strategy was to endure long enough until a cure appears. Maybe that will happen in the next few years.
The downside of the conference was simply reminding me that I have cancer (some good days I can forget) and Multiple Myeloma always comes back. The medium duration of remissions is only seven months, so I’ve already doubled that. There are outliers that stay in remission for 10 years.
As always, I want to express my great appreciation for your interest in my cancer journey. I can tell how many people read my blog posts, and it is usually the highest when I do a health update.
Mike
