On the Positive Side…

I’m trying to stop writing from a negative perspective. By sounding negative, I am engaging in hypocrisy, as in my real life, I am in my best years. I am profoundly thankful that my awful cancer is at bay and my life is 80% normal. But sometimes something moves me, positive or negative, that haunts me until I “sew the words to paper.” If I write in the night, for some reason that Freud might explain, it tends to be negative. I got up at 2:45 and wrote that piece about religion, waiting to publish it until later.

I don’t normally do a follow-up post, but in this case, I thought I would. I understand that I represent a narrow lane; I seek to return to a rational basis for finding truth in general life and within Christianity. While I respect the majority of Christians, whose lives of faith are centered on the subjective, I will speak for a moment about positive developments in this area of returning to a rational faith.

Several Christian groups are turning away from subjectivism. Biologos is an example. Also, Stephen Meyer’s work in Intelligent Design is another good example. There have been many, mostly evangelical, Christian apologists in my lifetime, but many have been cheesy or dishonest in their presentations, especially the young-earth creationists. Stephen is different, from my perspective. I will link to his lecture at Cambridge here, but also suggest that you search YouTube for more interviews and lectures. Lastly, I recommend his movie, The Story of Everything, which is now on Amazon.

There are a lot of positive things going on. We are at a pivotal point in the age of Christianity, and as the church is fracturing, many pieces are going in unhealthy directions. At the same time, it is a great opportunity to find a path out of religion and into a simpler, far more honest brand of Christianity.

Let me add, those of you who believe that subjective, mystical faith is the only way to have a rich personal relationship with God, I strongly disagree. By returning to science and seeing the world objectively, my relationship with the creator is far better than it has ever been, and far more mysterious and exciting.

Have a good day, Mike
